Waynesville, MO: Old Settlers Day Reenactment

Turners at Waynesville 2018

Union infantry passes around the Federal artillery line to attack the rebels at the 2018 Waynesville event.

The Pulaski County Museum and Historical Society will host its 39th annual Old Settlers Day July 27-28, 2019, at Waynesville City Park in Waynesville, MO.

Waynesville was occupied by Union forces beginning in 1862. A fort was built near the bluff overlooking Roubidoux Spring. The site was of strategic importance to protect the “wire road” between St. Louis and Springfield, MO, and to curtail regional “bushwhacker” activities. During the occupation the Old Stagecoach Stop served as hospital.

Battle reenactments are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. A General Grant presenter will perform a play on his life Friday evening at 7:00 on the park stage. A scenario where several captured Confederate prisoners will be executed is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday. In addition to the Civil War reenactment and encampment, other Old Settlers Day activities will include a pre-1840 encampment of Mountain Men who pioneered settlement westward across the United States. This area will include opportunities to practice fire starting, attend trapping, dutch oven cooking and blacksmithing exhibits, hear tall tales, and shop tradesmen vendors. Family activities will include performances by the Back Porch Players. Presenters will portray Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Philip Sheridan. The Old Stagecoach Stop Museum and the 1903 Route 66 Courthouse Museum will both be open to visitors Saturday. Admission to both locations is free of charge, although donations are appreciated. The Army Engineer Association Sverdrup Chapter will have their 8th Annual 5K Fun Run on Saturday. Run registration begins at 7 a.m., and the run begins at 8 a.m.
