NEWS OF 150 YEARS AGO
March/April 1862
From The Missouri Democrat, Saturday, March 1, 1862.
THE REBEL GAME.
In Dixie’s land the rebels stand
And bet their pile on Dixie,
They hold their hand in Dixie’s land
And bet their pile on Dixie.
A pair they show at Sumter’s throw—
Still bet their pile on Dixie;
They play a full at Run of Bull
And think they’ve won in Dixie.
And now behold, they play it bold
And go it blind on Dixie;
They brag of what a hand they’ve got-
Still go it blind on Dixie.
But little Mac dealt out the pack
And stocked the cards on Dixie,
And now he calls, as Henry falls,
To see the cards of Dixie.
At Donelson the hands were shown,
Four knaves, the cards of Dixie;
It won’t begin the pile to win,
And so they’re lost in Dixie.
And thus, whene’er the rebels dare
To strike their bets on Dixie,
Will Freedom call, while rebels fall,
And lose their bets on Dixie.
