TERRIBLE BATTLE NEAR CORINTH.
[Special Dispatch to the Missouri Democrat.]
CAIRO, Oct. 4.—News has just been received that a terrible battle is being fought in the vicinity of Corinth.
The conflict commenced yesterday morning and was continued up to 3 o’clock, p. m., which is the date of the last dispatch from Bethel station.
At that hour, heavy and rapid cannonading was distinctly heard at Bethel Station.
The attack on the railroad on Thursday, in which the rebels captured a train of about thirty loaded cars, an account of which I sent you on Friday night, was the commencement of the battle.
I can get no particulars to-night, as both railroad and telegraphic communication are cut off at Bethel.
